(From our first Issue, available in print-only form on Amazon.com this Halloween 2024.)
The Pulps! What can we say that other creators haven’t said before?—with probably better words. If you’re reading this, then you already know all about those adrenaline shots of pure entertainment–their hardboiled covers with artwork that bitch-slaps your attention span into paying attention–and all the greats that came out of that world: Philip K. Dick, Robert E. Howard, Robert Bloch, H.P. Lovecraft, Donald E. Westlake, and too many others to name here without boring you to tears.
But if you slipped on a banana peel and stumbled your way into finding our Instagram page or this book in magazine format and don’t know what in tarnation Pulp Fiction is, let us enlighten you about our Pulpy religion. And no, Pulp Fiction are not stories about people drinking freshly squeezed orange juice. It’s not just the name of Tarantino’s masterpiece second film or only the art found in the thrilling cheap magazines that were famous in the first fifty years of the 1900s. Pulp Fiction is a style. A state of mind. A way of life. If you value entertainment mora than any type of “teachings,” “awareness,” or “the message,” then you my friend, are a Pulp Believer.
If you’re rolling your eyes by now, thinking, “Yeah, yeah, get on with it. I gotta go watch whatever ‘content’ Netflix is shoving down my throat. And I’ve seen these types of new pulp anthologies before and was not impressed,” then by all means go. Thank you for making it this far, though.
But if you stay, you will find bite-size creations that touch upon the Pulps’ most popular genres: Action, Horror, Romance, Mystery, and Sci-fi. We have Pirates, Slashers, and Weirdos, Oh My!
These five stories explore synchronicities, fears of car crashes, phobias of big cities, and the questioning of our roles in modern societies.
But what we really offer that’s different from all the others that came before us is that we go against this “Me Me Me” trend that’s been destroying what Independently produced Art is all about. Indie Creators have been brainwashed into believing that they must step on each other to find success. The “oh-yeah-that’s-good-but I won’t say it or support it because it-will-take attention-away-from what I’m-doing” chip has been firmly implanted into the back of their brains. They don’t realize that the only competition we Indies face comes from Major Corporations. It’s basically the same attitude that’s been killing Rock and Roll. Unsupportive attitudes, too much infighting, too many gatekeepers–Rockabillies looking down on the Metalheads, Metalheads criticizing Punks, Punks hating Goths, Goths making fun of Emos–none of them ever realizing that if the music invokes a Rock and Roll spirit (guitars, bass, drums) then all of them are part of the same family. If you give our work a chance, shrug and say, “Bah, I can do better than that,” then tell us! Without being a jerk about it. We will find your work, support it, enjoy it, review it, and admire the hell out of you for creating it. That’s what Neo-Pulps! is all about.
We want to thank all the entertainers and creators who helped make us this way:
Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy the mail girl from The Last Drive-in, for creating a supportive Mutant family where everyone is welcome and all horror creations are appreciated. Creature Features’ Vincent, Tangella, and Livingston, for bringing back the classics and giving us thousands of hours of Pulpy entertainment. And finally, independent filmmakers Wigwolf and B. Harrison Smith for setting up inspiring examples that we all should follow: To hell with the critics, just make your art!
