Coffin Joe’s “At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul”/Melevill’s Hades Theater (Ep.11)

Melevill : “From 1964, here is José Mojica Marins’s (Coffin Joe/Zé do Caixão) ‘At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul’(Portuguese: À Meia-Noite Levarei Sua Alma) full movie hosted by me, Melevill, a part-time demonatrix, part-time horror hostess, full-time shadow demon and emissary of evil.

I am an entirely original creation. But since you humans need to label and examine everything, you can say Coffin Joe has inspired me as a horror hostess, just like my teacher Vampira and creepy uncle Freddy Kruger.”

Neo-Pulps! :“‘At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul’ is not only the first Brazilian horror film, it’s also part of an entirely original pulp horror genre. Along with ‘This Night I’ll Possess Your Corpse (1967)’,  ‘Embodiment of Evil (2008)’ and the other minor appearances of Coffin Joe in ‘The Strange World of Coffin Joe’(1968)–an anthology which was very influential on our upcoming film ‘Melevill’s Tales From Hades,’ and the almost meta ‘The Bloody Exorcism of Coffin Joe’ (1974), which 20 year later inspired ‘Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994)’.

The closest fiction that resembles this “Coffin Joe” genre are the Frankenstein and Dracula Hammer films, starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, which are sort of continuing stories where the villains are the most interesting part, and some Weir Tales stories like the “Doctor Satan” stories by Paul Ernst.

There’s a little bit of everything in the art of José Mojica Marins. The shock value of early John Waters’s films, the swagger of Clint Eastwood western characters, the music and directorial style of Dario Argento, and the anti-religious/ anti-authoritarian message of the goth and punk music scenes. Even Anton LaVey’s Church of Satan has claimed Coffin Joe as one of their own since they seemed to have put a copyright claim in  our ‘At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul’ Episode because they think that 1964 film has music that belongs to them, or to their band “The Infernal Order of The Black Flame.” That is very odd indeed.

The Church of Satan was founded in 1966. That must mean they own a time machine and have traveled back in time to Brazil in 1964 to create the soundtrack for ‘At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul.’ I guess it’s true what they say. The Devil is the king of selfishness. But just like Coffin Joe, Melevill is not afraid of no devils or bearded Satans. So, in the name of Melevill, we challenge the Church of Satan to a copyright showdown. We shall see whose lack of faith is the strongest.”

Special Thanks to our certifiable musical genius friend Tyler (Acityasleep) for his excellent song “Everybody Loves You When You Are Dead.” With his blessing, we hope to make a full music video for that song soon. Check out his bands ‘Acityasleep’ and ‘Against The Crucifix’ on most platforms:
