By now, anyone reading this will be wondering: Why does Neo-Pulps! insist on writing and talking about Hispanic, Puerto Rican, and Spanish horror niches like low-budget movies or horror hosts?
Why does any of that matter and what does it have to do with Pulp Stories? And the simple answer is that Pulp Fiction is a style ruled by a diverse range of genres, points of views, and subject matters.
We always stated that to us, Pulp Fiction is a way of life. So we’re always looking for different niches and subcultures to explore, to see what kind of point of views are out there, what creators from other countries are coming up with, and what kind of niches haven’t been explored yet.
We are living in the times of AI garbage, remakes, and copy paste culture. So finding something new, something different to explore in the horror fiction genre is part of our Pulp way of life. We sort of stumbled into the fact that our 2017 parody horror hostess character, Melevill, was the 1st of its kind.
A demon masquerading as a horror hostess and played by a Boricua artists is already an original concept. But add to it the fact that Melevill also did a traditionally “American” horror host show in Spanish, using Puerto Rican slang and pop cultural references that only Boricuas could understand, and now that concept goes from being original to being something totally alien.
We’re surprised by how little coverage there is to the subject of Horror Host from other countries, and more specifically, Horror Host Shows in Spanish.
While the internet is flooded with the same-by-the-numbers articles covering every new single piece of unnecessary merch that Booberella (real name of the host has been withheld for algorithmic purposes) comes up with, barely anyone mentions or covers the work of Spanish Horror Hosts like Melevill (Melanie Ramos) or La bruja maldita (Tamara Garina).
Horror hosts are a niche within a niche. And Spanish Horror hosts are another level of niche inside of those niches. But it’s still surprising that in these times where every type of subculture gets explored, dissected and covered, we still can’t find anyone else properly documenting this subject.
As always, we emailed several “professionals” about this, but they never replied. Melevill also recently asked a popular horror host by the name of –let’s call him Professor Uncle– if he knew of any other Spanish Horror hosts? Professor Uncle told Melevill to check out Coffin Joe.
Well, we love Professor Uncle, and to his credit, he was probably tired and didn’t understand the question, but Coffin Joe is Brazilian and he only spoke Portuguese.
While there are some similarities between Portuguese and Spanish, ultimately they’re both different languages. One of our best friends online is Brazilian, the great toy artist Marco (VHS Abstrato). He’s the only artist who has the official rights to make the Coffin Joe action figure.

Marco is also a horror expert. He told us that, aside from Coffin Joe and Liz Vamp, the only horror host he has ever heard of is Booberella. And now Melevill or course.
So here is our short list of the Spanish Horror hosts with have found:
Melevill ‘the Shadow demon’, the Demonatrix (2017-2018, 2024-)
Melevill’s Nightmare (2017-2018). Melevill’s Hades Theater (2024-)
Melevill is a demonic horror hostess character created and portrayed by Puerto Rican artist, actress, and author Melanie Ramos. She’s the 1st and only Puerto Rican horror host since 2017 and is the owner of Neo-Pulps! Publishing. She is known for her dark, witty persona and independent horror creations.
“La bruja maldita” (1967)
This was a Mexican horror host TV show starring Russian actress Tamara Garina as the Damned Witch, presenting weekly horror stories while stirring a potion in a cauldron, laughing hysterically, and screaming: “¡Mentira!” . She would come back after the story for a preview of next week’s episode, and end the show laughing and screaming “¡Mentira!” once again.
El Rato Muerto (2016-).
A hosted horror movie show with Raúl Aranda Montalbán as “Tanatorius Mortalbán”. He also does reviews and horror podcasting in Spanish.
Then there are these three who are not traditional horror hosts, but are more like parodies of horror hosts:
Lonje Moco (1999)
El Lonje Moco is one of the best-known characters of the Mexican actor-comedian Eugenio Derbez. He told different horror stories, but the joke was that he usually forgot the events of the story.
“El Ganster” (1990)
In the late night comedy show “No te Duermas,” el Ganster ( Antonio Sánchez) did several parodies of Horror hosts shows, especially during Halloween or with his “Kinky Tales” where he dubbed in Spanish several clips of different classic horror movies, often creating a whole new story with the use of cleaver editing. He did this years before Kung Pow! Enter the Fist (2002) perfected that style. Episodes of Melevill have also used that style of creating new stories by using scenes from other films:

“Eggie Huevollo” (1996)
Eggie Huevollo was played by Johnny Ray Rodriguez, the great vampire “Father” of Vampiros (2004). Cine Huevadas was a sketch of Jonny Ray’s show “Esto No Es Un Show,” which was like MadTV and one of our favorite shows growing up. Eggie was a character who spotted the mistakes in movies, usually horror, and made fun of the creators for not doing a better job of hiding things like: camera reflections on mirrors, visible boom mikes, or the most hilarious one, the wig of a stunt double falling off during a stunt.
